What Causes It?

Most people, at some point of their lives, come across this patchy brown discoloration and while it’s not a dangerous condition, it’s certainly an unpleasant one. Here are the five little known causes of melasma and hyperpigmentation:

  • Contraception Pills: besides their main function of preventing pregnancy, birth control pills are used to ease many different things – period pains, acne, oily skin. However, contraceptive pills can also cause oestrogen imbalance that can stimulates hyperpigmentation and can exacerbate melasma.

  • Skincare Products: with harsh chemicals that tend to irritate your skin are likely to worsen your melasma.

  • Genetic Predisposition: people with darker skin tones are more likely to develop hyperpigmentation.

  • Unprotected Sun Exposure: ultraviolet radiation  penetrate the skin cells on the face and cause a mutation leading to darkening of the skin cells.

Can You Get Rid Of It Permanently?

Unfortunately, there is not a permanent cure for melasma. Melasma can be kept under control by pigment-control treatments and the following prevention steps:

  • Wearing SPF daily: Since sunlight is one of the biggest triggers for melasma, daily sunscreen use is non-negotiable to keep it at bay. Choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of 30 or higher

  • Protective Clothing: Broad-brimmed hats help keep rays off vulnerable parts of the face. Seek shade whenever outdoors, as well.

  • Gentle skin care: Since products that irritate the skin exacerbate melasma, use gentle products that don't sting or burn.
