What Does DIY Skincare Really Do to Your Skin?

DIY skincare recipes are all over the internet boasting to miraculously solve skin problems with simple, cheap, available in your home ingredients. But is it really possible to get rid of acne with baking soda exfoliatiator?

 

  • Lemon juice is often used in DIY skincare recipes to clear up dark spots and brighten the skin tone. 

 

In reality, lemon juice disturbs the pH level of your skin and hinders the function of its lipid barrier. Lemons make your skin extremely sensitive to light and susceptible to photodamage. If you use lemon juice in your skincare routine regularly, you risk getting a chemical burn or developing hyperpigmentation. 

 

 

 

  • Raw eggs are believed to reduce fine lines and tighten the skin.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    The truths is the thick texture of raw eggs can clog your pores and cause breakouts. If you are using egg whites in your face masks, there's also the risk of salmonella. Harmful bacteria can get in your body through microscopic abrasions of the skin, so keep the eggs away from your face and make an omelette instead. 

 

  • Baking soda circulates the internet as a miracle cure for acne.

 

However, using it as an exfoliator is not only ineffective but can do real damage to your skin. Baking soda disrupts the activity of enzymes in the upper layers of your skin which hinders the function of your skin cells. The worst part is that damage caused by alkaline products such as baking soda is cumulative - the longer you use them, the more damage they do. 

 

 

  • Coconut oil is another overhyped DIY acne remedy.

 

 

Coconut oil is highly comedogenic due to its thick texture. If you have oily and acne-prone skin, coconut oil can exacerbate breakouts and make your T-zone shine worse. 

 

 

  • Sugar scrubs rose to fame thanks to Korean beauty blogs. 

 

 

Sugar crystals have uneven, jarred edges that will leave microscopic cuts on the top layer of your epidermis and damage your skin's protective barrier. Naturally, this will make your skin vulnerable to dryness, flakiness and irritation.
